Elena Ghica - Albanian personalities

Elena Ghica was a romanian-albanian writer and militant for women’s rights most known under the pseudonym of Dora D’Istria. Elena was the niece of reigning prince of Wallachia, Grigore IV Ghica. After marrying russian duke Alexander Koltsov-Massalski her name became Helena Koltsova-Massalskaya. She received a high education in various prestige universities from Dresden, Vienna, Venice and Berlin.

Dora never accepted his husband’s view of russian nationalism and orthodox bigotry which was shared by most of Emperor Nicholas I court and she suffered various health problems because of the russian climate. As a result Elena got to travel in many different countries such as: France, United States of America and Ireland. She also used to live in countries like: Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Anatolia. Dora collaborated with many magazines and was praised by lots of writers.

Elena Ghica was the first woman that escalated to Moench peak in the Swiss Alps ( 4105 metres altitude ) in the 11th of June 1855, then managed to reach Mont Blanc on 1 June 1860. She worked hard to bring the resources and technologies available in Western Europe to Eastern Europe, painted some valuable works and wrote many books in several languages: Romanian, German, French, Italian, Latin, Russian, ancient and modern Greek and had a cosmopolitan view of the world. D’Istria was named honorary citizen by the Greek parliament and by many Italian cities. Also she was a member of the Italian Academy.
